City of Austin 2010 Cemetery Audit and Department Plan of Action
The Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) in association with other city departments, has initiated a comprehensive review of city and contractor operations and management of the City's five (5) municipal cemeteries. This review was initiated based on an audit released in June, 2010 by the Office of the City Auditor (OCA). The OCA reported deficiencies in the management and oversight of the current contract between the City and InterCare Corporation, the city's contracted vendor for cemetery management. The OCA audit can be found at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/auditor/au10111.htm.

PARD staff is also committed to providing the public's input as part of this management review. A public stakeholder’s input session was held August 24, 2010 at the PARD main office. More than twenty (20) interested citizens attended to provide insight and commentary regarding current management and areas for suggested improvement. The summary of the meeting can be found at this link . Additional public input meetings will be held to solicit addition public input and participation as PARD develops update cemetery management strategies.

PARD is scheduled to return to the Austin City Council, Finance and Audit Committee September 2010 to present an update on the department’s progress in addressing the audit findings and efforts to improve accountability, enhance public input, communicate rules and regulations, and plan to improve the physical condition of all five (5) city cemeteries.

This website will be updated on a regular basis to include information updates, links to research reports, and will include dates and locations for future meetings.
